European Commission calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies

The 2009 Implementation Report for the European Framework for Safer Mobile Use by Younger Teenagers and Children was released this month.

26 mobile operators across the EU had signed up to the voluntary codes based on the framework by February 2007.

Together they serve around 580 million customers, 96% of all EU mobile customers.

The report found that some progress had been made since the last report in 2008, but that there were still improvements to be made, with 12 operators still providing adult content without the option for access control.

EU Telecoms Commissioner, Viviane Reding, stated: “Protection of minors is not a luxury, but indispensable if new communication technologies want to be accepted in our European societies.

Mobile operators still need to be more ambitious to make measures for the purpose of protecting minors more effective in all European countries, and also to make content classification more transparent”.
